About Sandra Kay Helsel

SK Helsel connects its clients with opinion-leaders and decision-makers in business, finance, research and the media. Employing her Golden Rolodex and global network – “FOS,” Friends of Sandra – Dr. Helsel and her team craft custom campaigns suited to each client’s specific needs. They combine strategic communications, media relations, event marketing, and conference and seminar design to produce powerful, persuasive, and carefully scored series of conference events, media placements, and personal introductions for her clients – what’s required to stand out from the crowd in today’s turbulent capital and new-business markets.

Sandra's beat is worldwide with an emphasis on Silicon Valley, Southern California, and the new, emerging-technology markets in the American Southwest: Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico.

Sandra’s clients have included such high-tech powerhouses as IBM, Sun Microsystems, Pennwell, JupiterMedia, Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI), Internet.com, Sony Film Institute, Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute, JupiterMedia, The Getty Institute, UCSD CONNECT, Arizona Research Labs, San Diego Supercomputing Center, and the University of Arizona Medical School. Sandra’s startup clients have included 5DT, Breault Research, Coronado Ventures, ImaRx, MER, ModViz, Nanocrystals Imaging, Nanostellar, Oingo, Oxford NanoLabs, SA-BIOsa, and Tailored Materials Corporation among others.

Currently, Sandra is Communications Director for NanoBioNexus in San Diego and Media Relations Chair for the Arizona Nanotechnology Cluster.

Prior to founding SK Helsel Associates, Sandra launched and managed Jupitermedia's Nanoelectronicsplanet website and conference series, with accompanying events in Singapore, New York City, Boston, and San Jose. Her weekly column, “NanoCircuit,” set the rules for nano-electronics coverage, commercialization, and investment. Earlier, Sandra was Editor-in-Chief for SGI’s Iris Universe magazine (later retitled, Innovations 3).

Sandra began her business career as Editor-in-Chief and conference producer for Mecklermedia's pioneering VR World. She was also U.S. editor for London-based VR News and organized that publisher's "Virtual Humans" conferences in Hollywood. Bay Area technology commentator Dan Duncan dubbed Sandra "The First Lady of VR," an honor still respected among virtual reality’s pioneers and by today’s new generation of visualization and simulation developers and users.

Sandra earned her Ph.D. in media ethnography from the University of Arizona. She then embarked on a career focused on learning theory, communications, and technology. One of her earliest responsibilities was directing a groundbreaking, multimillion-dollar rural-education project for the State of Alaska. Today, she uses the cross-cultural communication skills she first honed in the Arctic to enable business, science, and media organizations to effectively communicate with key constituencies.

Sandra specializes in:

  1. Positioning
  2. Strategic Relationships
  3. Conference Concepts and Program Design

"Gives me daily updates on only the news I want, greatly reducing the time I spend doing research. I now have 3 to 4 extra hours per day to concentrate on what the news means, and how it will effect my clients."

I highly recommend this service.
